Season Review 2010-11

Season Review by Emma Delaney

This was a very funny season for the 6ths, having won the league and being promoted last year, it was always going to be tough in division 11 and Chis was always going to be missed. We got off to a flying start with a massive squad, David and I struggled to put names to faces each week there were so many players. But the 6ths commitment to training each week was outstanding. Thanks to Mick for the wonderful training sessions he took. Did you have to set such a high standard Mick for me to follow!!

With last year’s star players, we said hello to all the newbies but we’d be here all night if I named them because it was half the squad! You have been great additions to the club both on and off the
pitch. I hope you’ve all enjoyed your first season in Railway and that you’ll be back for more.

After a few weeks, we said goodbye to Maria and Meadhbh as they joined the fabulous fifths and to Ciara who left on her travels. The team settled down and played some nice hockey in the first half of the season but luck was not on our side, we only lost one game before Christmas but had several draws. Even the appearance of Russ the mascot didn’t work. I hope he’s there tonight!

The old rivals Pembroke ended our cup campaign but we got our revenge last week with a superb display of hockey & on this occasion we were just unlucky not to beat them by more! We were unfortunate with injuries losing Niamh in goals and then Gillian but in true team spirit Fiona, Gillian and Naomi all stepped into goals before Rochie returned from her travels. We battled in snow in Naas, we legged it from lucan when Jenny carded Weston & we were unlucky in Botanic when Ali and Tanya in her 4 inch heels came to our rescue.

It has been heart stopping stuff watching on the sideline and there’ll be no stopping us next year! Thanks to Gillian for captaining, Aileen for ably deputizing and everyone who helped out this season, we really appreciated it.

RU6S With Coach & Captain

 Railway 6s – 1 v Weston – 0

5th February 2011

An afternoon game saw the 6ths in wet & windy Lucan. Having been unsuccessful last week the 6ths were determined to win. A very even first half saw opportunities for both sides however the score at half time was still nil all. The game became increasingly intense in the second half resulting in a Weston player being carded as both teams battled it out.  The only goal of the came after two short corners in quick succession…the 1st push out from Ellen reached Lynda who passed it out to Ali who was creeping into the circle on the left but no goal! The 2nd again to Lynda who dealt it right this time to Jane who banged it into the goal!!! It was a tough final 12minutes as we hung on and then joy as the final whistle blew! We were delighted with our win and look forward to more. Thanks to Jenny for umpiring and Ali, Ruth Anne and Jane for helping us out.

Season 2009-10

Captain: Gillian Moore
Coach: Graham Chisholm

The 6s had a bit of a shaky start with two losses for our first two games and no one could have anticipated the season we were about to have….

Those two losses turned out to be our only losses in the league all season! Our winning streak started with our third game of the season and our first at home beating Botanic 5 – 1. And so it continued and we had racked up wins against Newbridge, Weston & Malahide by Christmas.

We did have a blip in the road to success of riding high in the league when it came to a Cup game against Mullingar away where we lost 5 – 0. It was a brutal blow but we brushed it aside and battled on.  Two draws and six wins in the latter part of the season left us top of the league and feeling top of the world!

Our own Aisling Breen’s final match report & photos to match really said it all…

Railway 5 – Diocesan 0Hockey subs – €425, hockey kit – €70, winning the league – priceless!!!!Railway 6ths turned up at Dios on Saturday afternoon for our last league game knowing that Dalkey were only 1 point behind so only victory would guarantee the title. Promotion was already ours but we wanted more. We took to the pitch knowing that Dios also wanted the win to avoid relegation. The game would be won by the side who wanted it more. Both sides took a while to suss each other out but we eventually made the breakthrough and were 2-0 up at half time. We still couldn’t relax knowing if they scored it could get very tight but the nerves has subsided a bit and we relaxed into the game.Dios couldn’t cope with Maria Murphy’s long runs up the middle of the pitch and she was rewarded for her efforts with two goals. Also on the score-sheet was our prolific goalscorer, Jane Greer and the ever calm Jonty with her goal coming off a short corner which has worked well all season. Aileen too knocked in another goal in her first season after she took up a great position from a rebound – Jean’s shouting on a Wednesday obviously paid off! This left the score at 5-0 which flattered us as the Dios side never gave up as the goals went in and they showed great heart. Once the final whistle went, the champagne flowed in proper flutes no less.We would like to thank those who turned up to support us on Saturday and throughout the season.Special thanks must go to Rochie and Aileen for supplying the champagne and keeping us full of jellies at half time all winter. We also really appreciate the effort and time put in by Chis and Gill to get us to the top, ably backed by John and Jean. Division 11 next year? Bring it on!
